Women with herpes suffer some of the same symptoms as as men. An herpes outbreak starts with an itching or tingling feeling in the genital area. This is followed by redness of the skin and then the forming of blisters. These blisters are sore when touched and last longer in women than in men.

The symptoms are very similar in both men and women and in fact there are often little or no symptoms. Because of this most people infected with it are not aware that they have it for sometimes years However, if there are signs on the first outbreak, which happens 2 - 4 weeks after exposure to it, they can be quite pronounced. If you do get symptoms when you are first infected it is known as a primary infection and is usually more sever than the usual recurrent infection.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease and now infects 25% of the U.S. population. There are approximately 90% of those who have the virus that are unaware they are infected because they either don't have any symptoms at all or they are so minimal that they don't associate the symptoms with the virus.

The virus spreads through symptomatic and asymptomatic viral shedding. You need to come into contact with some form of viable herpes shedding in order to become infected. Following this infection you can remain symptom free for around 2 to 20 days and then you will have your first outbreak. Please note however that some people never show any outward symptoms of herpes and yet they are still carrying it and they may be infecting other people as well.

Many female symptoms herpes displays are not even noticed. The disease can lie dormant for long periods of time. The first outbreak is usually the most serious and subsequent outbreaks usually are more mild. It is very common for women to not notice an outbreak or to think it is another, less serious problem. For some women the outbreaks are very painful and hard to ignore. There are treatments that will help to reduce outbreaks and help with the pain and discomfort associated with the disease.

Many herpes vaccines have been developed through the years in the hopes of providing a cure for herpes simplex 1. Most of them have been proven to trigger a very strong immunity reaction to the virus. Some vaccines have reduced the number of subsequent outbreaks to the point where they are virtually non-existent. Unfortunately, none of these vaccines have resulted in the proven eradication of the herpes virus from the nervous system. Many studies on mice have been conducted and proven successful, but the same rate of success has yet to be proven in humans.
